(after posting the original article yesterday, I got a disgruntled anon message from someone who felt I was too hard on the poor Senator because I said he was “fretting.” My apologies, in the future I will be sure to be more charitable towards the rich. The message I got is below, for your amusement.)

  • “We use almost every dollar made” - I’m supposed to pity you for using your money?
  • “He’s not living like a king” - Yeah, just a viceroy.
  • “Don’t pass judgment until you’ve been there yourself” - When I’m making a quarter million every year, I’ll get back to you.
  • Your father makes over a QUARTER MILLION every year - I’m sure your family has some kind of savings for college. If not, that was poor planning on your father’s part. Who has six children and doesn’t save at all for their college tuition?
  • 2k square feet is indeed a small house, in comparison to Versailles or, say, Australia.
  • You have three cars. They all work, two are vans, and one is Jetta. Am I supposed to pity you because they aren’t a Lotus, Lambo, and Mustang? Hah.

The fact is, my dear dumb anon, that people are going to have a hard time making ends meet no matter how much fucking money they have. Comprende? I was being mean to the good Senator not because he was making bank, but because he was making bank and pretending that he wasn’t.

I grew up in a household with a single mother who made literally only 18k a year. My father’s Social Security paid the part of the rent, electricity, and water bills for my entire childhood, and the money he put into into a college fund when I was a toddler is covering tuition. My household income until I was 16 was 30k a year. And you know what? We did perfectly fine. We had one car, a Camry that we kept for 12 years and 200,000 miles. My mom and I lived in a cozy rented house next to a hospital. And you know what? We saved and we managed to do perfectly well. I always had new clothes and new toys, we went on vacations, and I went to private school. On 50k a year now, we live in a great townhouse in a nice suburb, I attend an Ivy League school (on a scholarship, granted), we spent a week in Paris this past summer, and our car is maybe three years old. Oh, and my mother gives nearly 15% of our income to her church (10% tithe = 5k = what you guys give a year + weekly and missionary giving), so don’t think you can blame your monetary problems on religious giving. Personally I don’t advocate giving that much to a church, but it’s her money. It’s not about how much you make, it’s about what you do with it.

Your family literally has an average income that is 800% of my family’s, and my family didn’t even have it that badly. Seriously, we made twice the poverty line. Median household income in the US for a family of four is 45k. Don’t expect any pity from me because your grand foyer isn’t grand enough. Just shut the fuck up and be grateful that your family’s loaded.
